National Polio Immunization Campaign starts (07/08/07)

An estimated five million children in Northern Sudan States will be targeted in a special round of polio immunization which started yesterday.

The Ministry of Health stated yesterday that the campaign came timely with several other campaigns in the neighbouring countries after some cases were discovered in Chad.

Immunization Programme Director, Dr. Al-Tayeb Ahmed Al-Sayed affirmed that this campaign will witness the use of the vaccine against the virus discovered in Chad. He added that the ministry established vaccination centers in each of the Darfur States and Port Sudan to avoid the transmission of the virus through pilgrims using Sudan as a transit station in their journey.

South Darfur Acting Governor, Abdul Latif Mohammed Sharif affirmed launching of the immunization campaign in his State with target of about half a million children in cooperation with Federal Ministry of Health, WHO and UNICEF pointing to the agreement with UNICEF to transport the vaccines by air to the region's areas.

South Darfur State Minister of Health, Yahia Hussein urged Abuja non-signatory movements to cooperate with the immunization teams to perform its task.
