Babanousa-Wau railway line declared free from landmines (03/07/07)

The 446 kilometer-long Babanousa-Wau railway line that links between north and south Sudan has become free of landmines, said the General Director of the National Centre for Combating Land-Mines Col. Al-Awad Al-Bashir Ali.

He said in a statement that operations for removing landmines began in early March in the current year of 2007 and were finalized on June 10th.

He said that the demining process was conducted by qualified cadres from the Sudanese Armed Forces, Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and the Joint Integrated Units.

This project comes after the peace agreement signed between the Sudanese government and the government for southern Sudan and is a major step towards development in the country.
