Dinar currency ceases to be legal tender in Southern Sudan (02/07/07)

The circulation of the Sudanese Dinar as legal tender in Southern Sudan ended on Saturday in all parts of the region.

However, according to the Central Bank of Sudan, the Dinar coins will continue to circulate up to September 1st when the Dinar will completely cease to be legal tender in Southern Sudan and be replaced by the new Sudanese pound.

The director of administration and finance in the Bank of Southern Sudan (BOSS), Mathing Maying, told APA on Saturday that more than five billion Sudanese Dinar ($26 million) have been exchanged to the new Sudanese pounds in the South Sudan Central Bank.

The new Sudanese pound was introduced in January under the terms of a 2005 peace deal that ended over two decades of disagreements.
